Ceramic Art Pottery Works in Progress by Michael W. Moses with Tyler Gibson

The last few weeks have been going along rather swiftly. I have been getting South Coast Antiques set up at Centuries Antique Mall over in D'Iberville and working on all manner of things other than pottery. I have almost constantly been thinking about doing pottery, but I have just not been getting much done.  I am going through a Zen period where thinking about pottery has to be as good as doing the pottery. Oh, what pieces I have been working on in my mind!

About two weeks ago my apprentice Tyler Gibson came over to finish up his last projects.  He left last week to go off to do his basic training for the army. so I guess it will be awhile before he gets any more pieces made.  He will be greatly missed.  I can only wish him the very best in serving his country!

Here are a few images of the pieces I was working on and the last ones that Tyler did.

New Dragon Pod Vase by Michael W. Moses and New Ceramic Art work by Tyler Gibson

My last post featured a freshly painted Dragon Pod Vase and here it is out of the kiln and ready for viewing at South Coast Antiques & Gallery. I am really pleased with the outcome of this vase. The Yellow is very intense and the red is just a gleaming candy apple red! The inside is Kermit the frog green with blue dots. This vase is loosely based on the Pitaya fruit, also known as the Dragon fruit.

Now here we have a new piece by Tyler Gibson. This ceramic art pottery work is done in Earthen tones and was specifically painted to give it a bottom of the sea feel and look. The white swirl seems to give this piece a real sense of movement.  In my opinion movement is a real plus for a piece of pottery.

New Cramic Art Pottery by Tyler Gibson

Here are two new works by my student, Tyler Gibson.

This piece exhibits a great use of form to create an illusion of movement. One can almost see this pod exploding outward and releasing its contents into the world! Or maybe it is some type of omnivorous alien  plant! Either way Tyler is doing very good in my opinion and proceeding by leaps and bounds.

With this piece Tyler has taken a free form shallow bowl, embellished it with stamp work and then given it a two color finish and glaze. The over all effect has a very traditional look while maintaining a fresh modern appearance..

I will post more of Tyler Gibson's works as he progresses.

Tyler Gibson's latest work of cramic art pottery

Here is a new work by my student, Tyler Gibson.  He has entitled this creation "Tongue Kiss This".  He has been studying with me for a very short period and as I knew well before he started, that he would have a real knack for creating great pieces. Under my minimal guidance he is progressing rapidly.  He is taking a break over the summer months though and is currently in Vicksburg, Mississippi, working as an historical interpreter at the Vicksburg National Military Park . He is working in historical clothing, braving the heat in extremely uncomfortable war between the states period wool, educating the visiting public about  the Battle of Vicksburg, waged from May 18 to July 4, 1863. In my opinion even though the weather is exceptionaly hot this is a very cool summer job. Tyler is a student of history, specializing in the Civil War and WWII eras. But he is doing continued reasarch into the theory of pottery, techniques, and the concepts of what makes a piece good, with of course a lot of emphisis on quality. He took a block of clay with him and has said that he will be making further pieces as he gets free time from his work. I am rather anxious to see what he will be producing!

My student Tyler Gibson's First Piece of Art Pottery

My student Tyler has just finished his very first piece of art pottery!  I am about as proud as one can be about it.  His finished work really shows a spark of ability that has me excited to see what his future works will be like. I will be posting more of his works in the near future.

Tyler Gibson's first completed ceramic art pottery piece is a hand modeled bulb type vase.
IMHO, It's just beautiful!
