Metropolitan Museum of Art Gives a Generous Gift of Free Art eBooks to Everyone!

Over the weekend I was enjoying an in-depth browse through, looking at some of the ancient sculptural, ceramic, pottery and other remarkable art pieces being sold by Christie's Auction house of London.  The particular auction took place on 26 April 2012.  I was shocked by how high some of the realized prices were and even more surprised by how many lots just did not make minimum.  I was a bit disappointed that as good a quality as these piece were that I could not see more detail on some of the items. I had gone on a Google quest for larger images, when I stumbled upon this art blog, "Nord on Art".  A very informative and knowledgeable blog where there were larger images of a number of the great items from the afore said auction.  I stared reading back the posts on the "Nord on Art" blog and came across this "Free – Download more than 300 Met Museum catalogs" and much to my dismay, indeed there are 368 Metropolitan Museum of art books beautifully digitized and offered to the public for free.  What a beautiful and kind gesture for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City to make!  One can either read and enjoy these lavishly informative books on line or download them for your home eLibrary in PDF format!  Now I have to say, how cool is that!  Also, almost all of these books are out of print and many are difficult to obtain in the original printed editions. This collection has books for almost every interest. Here are just a few of the many exciting titles that are available:

Blue and White: Early Japanese Export Ware
Lerner, Martin
(1978)
Dangerous Liaisons:
Fashion and Furniture
in the Eighteenth Century
Koda, Harold, and
Andrew Bolton,

I will take this opportunity to thank the Metropolitan Museum of Art four this magnificent gift to the world of art. This is and will continue be, a boon to artists, scholars, educators, and collectors for many a year to come.

Queen's Tears Bromeliad Billbergia Nutans in Green Blue Dotted Bulb Vase by Michael W. Moses

The other day I noticed that my Queen's Tears Bromeliad (Billbergia Nutans) is in bloom once more so I clipped three off and put them in one of my ceramic art pottery vases. This particular Green Blue Dotted Bulb Vase is a favorite of mine. It is just perfect for displaying so many different flowers. I was so pleased with the over all effect from this arrangement that I took my camera and fired off a few shots. This is one that I particularly liked.  The colors of the flowers make it look as of I had specifically chosen these colors to match the flowers.

I featured this same vase on my May 31, 2011 blog post showing it with a totally different type of flower.
This vase and the Queen's Tears blossoms are currently on display at our main counter at South Coast Antiques & Gallery in Ocean Springs, MS.  They will be in bloom (with any luck) for about the next three or four days, so if you are in the area stop by and have a look at them up close and in person.

Blue Lotus Flower Ceramic Art Pottery Bowl by Michael W. Moses Now on Etsy!

I call this piece of ceramic art pottery the "Blue Lotus Flower Bowl"  I have had it on my counter at South Coast Antiques in Ocean Springs for awhile now holding some of my business cards and featuring some of the last Hibiscus flowers of the season.
When I first put this piece out in the shop I had a woman say to me that one of her roses would look great displayed in the small vase portion of this piece. I jokingly said to her, "Oh, no Mame, This is a blue lotus flower bowl. Only a Blue lotus flower can be displayed in this piece". She looked at me and replied," Now where on Earth is one supposed to find a blue lotus flower at"!  I responded to her, that, that was the whole point of the piece!
Well, my search for a blue lotus flower for it has come to no avail and I have had to settle for less exotic blossoms.  I have some images of this piece below and please take note that the business cards displayed are merely for looks, they are from the long bygone era when everyone had a pager.

Dotted Blue Bulb Vase by Michael W. Moses SOLD today at South Coast Antiques & Gallery

This afternoon we sold one of my bulb vases. This one is called the "Dotted Blue Bulb Vase". It was purchased by a man and woman from Biloxi that were getting it for a Christmas gift for their daughter in California. This little bulb vase has so much lively movement that it just seems as if it will run away at any moment, but it's created to be stable and support one long thin blossom with maybe a small leaf or two on it. Imagine a brightly colored tulip, a long stemmed spider lilly, or even a single orchid sprouting from it's bulbous body. But in my opinion a flower is not even necessary to make this work of art a stand out piece in any room.

"Napoleon's Bee Bowl" and "Where the Red Tendril Grows Bowl" by Michael W. Moses

Here are two of my latest works of ceramic art pottery.
The first piece is a thin walled bowl, that I call "Napoleon's Bee Bowl".  It is a small bowl that has a small bee, which was the Emblem of  Napoleon Bonaparte.
The link is to a great blog post about the Napoleonic Bee with a few great examples, including one that is really special!
The exterior of the bowl is done in lively tidal pool colors and the interior is in tones of  royal purple.  All pulled together with a neat little sunshine yellow and bright turquoise blue bee.

My second new bowl  is called "Where the Red Tendril Grows Bowl".  It has a pink exterior with baby blue and red detailing and a rich interior that is done up in squash bloom yellows with blue designs and one small bright red, probing tendril coming out of the side of the bowl.  This one of a kind, hand crafted, work of ceramic art will radiate a feeling of unbridled exuberance to any location  it may be placed!

Both pieces of art pottery are currently available and may be viewed at South Coast Antiques & Gallery in Ocean Springs, MS.

My Blue Hanami Bowl Sold, 9-11, earthquake and tsunami in Miyagi

Yesterday at South Coast Antiques & Gallery, I sold one of my ceramic art pottery pieces that I called "My Blue Hanami Bowl" to a woman from Northern New Mexico. She informed me that in April after the March 11 earthquake and tsunami in Miyagi prefecture, Japan, that people in Japan were requested not to observe the annual tradition of Hanami in respect of those who lost their lives. Hanami is the art of cherry blossom watching. It really made me think. I have always found Hanami to be one of the most beautiful and totally genteel of activities. It seems like such a beautiful way to show respect for those poor souls that were lost, by not participating in something so beautiful as hanami. Besides being the 10 year anniversary of 9-11 today, this also marks 6 months since the earthquake and tsunami in japan. I send my condolances to the families and friends of all people associated with both 9-11 and the earthquake-Tsunami in Japan and my prayers for those lost in both. May the wonder and the beauty of hanami once more fill your hearts.

Night and Day Yellow Blue Bowl by Michael W. Moses, Ocean Springs, MS

Oh, do I have egg on my face. I have been telling people for a fairly long time that not a single person in Ocean Springs, MS. where our shop is located, owns a piece of my pottery. I have just found out that I have been misinforming people. I sold two pieces of my art pottery this afternoon my Red White Mellon Bowl  and my Dark Rainbow Tea Cup. As I was logging them into my inventory files where I keep images of each piece that I make along with it's unique designator serial number, and who purchased it, I made a surprise discovery. I saw this Blue Yellow Fossil covered work that I called, Night and Day Yellow Blue Bowl  This is a piece that I made a couple of years back. The inside and outside is completely hand carved. The inside is blue on yellow and the out side is yellow on blue. I just saw that it was sold a bit over a year ago and that it had been sold to a customer that only lives a few streets away from our shop. Oops!  I guess one person in town here has purchased one of my pieces. They made a good choice in my opinion. It was a bowl that I was quite pleased with. Also note that it of course has one red herring on it!

Update on finished Trilobite and Ammonite Fossil Patterned Bowl by Michael W. Moses

This is an update on my post for Tuesday, March 8, 2011. This is the photograph of the finished Trilobite and Ammonite Fossil Patterned Bowl After the March 8 post I glazed this piece and had it fired and then I put on a coating of Pearlecent glaze and it was fired for a third and final firing. Each Ammonite now has lustrous iridescent pearl like finish that really makes for a really great effect.

New Michael W. Moses Ceramic Art Pottery, Blue Watchworks Artifact Vessel

Here is my latest new piece of ceramic art pottery that I call "Blue Watchworks Artifact Vessel". This piece is in a neo Victorian style with a bit of Steampunk
thrown in to give it a cool textural effect.

This is kind of where old and new meet and fight it out for dominance!

Ceramic Art Pottery Bulb Vase in a Bowl by Michael W. Moses SOLD

This is a piece that I call "Bulb Vase in a Bowl". As the name implies it is one of my bulb vases attached to one of my bowls. It is intricately hand painted in deep rich tones of blue, green, teal and red, with a few pink flowers tossed into the bowl. This piece is hand modeled in extra heavy ceramic so that it can hold an extra tall, extra large single flower and not fall over.
