"Yellow Red Service Shell Bowl" Hand Sculpted Ceramic Art Pottery by Michael W. Moses Ocean Springs, MS

Fresh to our world from a sun drenched alien seashore comes the "Yellow Red Service Shell" bowl.

A luxurious study in a matt, satiny, sulphur yellow exterior glaze.

The yellow outside is a perfect foil for the shiny glassy red interior of this piece.




 Each little tiny blue dot is painted one at a time and then painted over with a drop of clear glaze. The yellow is three coats of glaze tediously hand painted around the dots.

The flowing pink and red interior is totally hand painted to give it the effect of a natural flowing surface and then covered in crystal clear glaze.

 

The bottom is hand engraved with my signature and place of manufacture. The writing is filled with colored glaze that is fired on to the piece.

Michael W. Moses Ceramic Art Pottery Octopus Bowl and Cpative Bulb Vase...Sold

Yesterday I sold two pieces of my ceramic art pottery.  I sold my large octopus bowl, that was based upon ancient Greek Minoan culture pottery pieces. The Minoan civilization was closely connected with the sea and much of the Minoan pottery had images that related to to sea based motifs. My bowl  was fashioned with a small barnacle on the side that has a spot wore through the glaze on the inside of the bowl and it has a small white bisque ceramic ball that is fired in place and freely rattles around loose inside the barnacle..

I also sold the piece "Orange Captive Bulb Vase" that I featured in my Sunday, December 11, 2011 post.

Booth works were purchased by a very nice couple that does historic style photography nation wide in their own mobile studio. Now how cool is that traveling around the country in a mobile photography studio and taking photographs of people dressed in historic Victorian style clothing.  They have purchased some of my pieces in the past and wanted to add these two works to their growing collection.

Cretaceous Carapace Ceramic Art Pottery Bowl by Michael W. Moses, Ocean Springs, Mississippi

This is my Cretaceous Carapace Bowl. This one looks as if it might have been found on the glittering white sands of some warm exotic ancient sea.  Reminiscent of the shell from some ancient or alien sea life this art pottery bowl is approximately 6 inches long and about 4 inches wide and around 3½ inches tall and packs a lot of great eye appeal.  I was very pleased with how vividly the colors came out on this hand sculpted piece of art pottery. I just finished three new pieces that I thought that I would share here on my blog. The first is a Letter Embossed Orchid Pot That I made for an orchid that I have that I have just not had any luck with at all. I may just put it out in the shop with a new orchid plant in it.

The second is a matt Red Sponge Pot with a glossy yellow Interior that fades into a dark red.  This piece has an organic quality that I really find appealling.  It looks like some form of life that could be setting in a crystal clear sea basking in the hot noonday sun of an alien world.  Two delicatly painted stones accompany this piece, one is almost jade like and the other is possably an azurite, who knows maybe they are gemstones that do not even exist here on Earth.

The third is an incense burner that I call the smoker. It is a bowl that has a small three rhinestone attachment on the inside. It sets on a stand and has barnacles that have openings that allow an inscense cone to be laced undernrigth so that the smoke can drift out of the barnacles and drift up around the bowl. This piece was inspiered by stories about life around the thermal vents that occur in the depths of the oceans.  I will make a small video clip of this piece that I will put on YouTube shortly so that one may view this piece in action.

Blue Lotus Flower Ceramic Art Pottery Bowl by Michael W. Moses Now on Etsy!

I call this piece of ceramic art pottery the "Blue Lotus Flower Bowl"  I have had it on my counter at South Coast Antiques in Ocean Springs for awhile now holding some of my business cards and featuring some of the last Hibiscus flowers of the season.

When I first put this piece out in the shop I had a woman say to me that one of her roses would look great displayed in the small vase portion of this piece. I jokingly said to her, "Oh, no Mame, This is a blue lotus flower bowl. Only a Blue lotus flower can be displayed in this piece". She looked at me and replied," Now where on Earth is one supposed to find a blue lotus flower at"!  I responded to her, that, that was the whole point of the piece!

Well, my search for a blue lotus flower for it has come to no avail and I have had to settle for less exotic blossoms.  I have some images of this piece below and please take note that the business cards displayed are merely for looks, they are from the long bygone era when everyone had a pager.

Getting Ready for Black Friday at South Coast Antiques & Gallery

Some people are avoiding the Black Friday  crowds by starting early this year at South Coast Antiques & Gallery. Today I sold three pieces of my pottery. I had two people that have on a number of occasions purchased pieces of my art pottery come to the shop and spend a bit of time visiting and deciding which works that they wanted. When the dust finally settled they had made in my opinion three really excellent choices. The Golden Triangle Bowl Alien Artifact, The Unfolding (Alien Inscription Bowl), and the Spider Web Matrix, Tree Frog Vase. After which I went out and had a great Red Fish dinner at a local restaurant. Over all a very nice day I must say.

Some Ceramic Art Pottery Works in Progress and a New Bowl by Michael W. Moses

It's been awhile since I have done a post. I have been busy with the shop and have had a number of items that I have been researching for the shop. I am going to post a few images of some of the ceramic art pottery pieces that are being fired now. I  have been working on some new ideas that involve large spikes sticking out all over. I find spikes to be way cool and loads of fun to make. The spikes are a bit of a chore to paint, but I really love the over all effect that they can create. I did the "Green Hunger" Pod vase a while back and have had spikes on my mind ever since. The painted pieces in the images below will be glazed and refired. Once they have been glazed and refired the colors on these pieces will be bold and bright and shiny.

A Couple of Un-Fired Greenware Works in Progress

Here is a recently finished bowl. I call this one an "Alien Logo Bowl". This bowl is bright yellow on the exterior and has a stamp work design with bright blue dots. The interior has a distressed, pale cream ground with a lively ancient design from a faraway unknown world! I love doing these paper thin bowls, when tapped they have a delightful bell like ring.

"Napoleon's Bee Bowl" and "Where the Red Tendril Grows Bowl" by Michael W. Moses

Here are two of my latest works of ceramic art pottery.

The first piece is a thin walled bowl, that I call "Napoleon's Bee Bowl".  It is a small bowl that has a small bee, which was the Emblem of  Napoleon Bonaparte.

The exterior of the bowl is done in lively tidal pool colors and the interior is in tones of  royal purple.  All pulled together with a neat little sunshine yellow and bright turquoise blue bee.

 

 My second new bowl  is called "Where the Red Tendril Grows Bowl".  It has a pink exterior with baby blue and red detailing and a rich interior that is done up in squash bloom yellows with blue designs and one small bright red, probing tendril coming out of the side of the bowl.  This one of a kind, hand crafted, work of ceramic art will radiate a feeling of unbridled exuberance to any location  it may be placed!

New Art Pottery, Night Time Feeding Frenzy Bowl by Michael W.Moses

I did  a post on Wednesday, August 31, 2011 showing a new starfish bowl that I had just painted. It has been fired and is ready to be shown! So here it is.

The bowl portion of this piece is painted like smooth polished sea stone on the outside and has a blue on white interior design with a nice thick shiny glaze. The Starfish is Matt glazed and has individually applied (one at a time) points! The starfish has a rough texture that is actually reminiscent of a real starfish.

Satsuma Sanskrit Slip Trailing Bowl by Michael W. Moses at South Coast Antiques & Gallery

My latest piece of ceramic art pottery is called "Satsuma Sanskrit Slip Trailing Bowl".  This bowl is very thin and has a great ring to it when one taps it gently with a finger.  I did this ceramic art pottery bowl with hand applied, high relief, slip trailing and impressed vintage Japanese text. In this work I have used the Japanese text solely as an artistic device to intensify the over all non western design of this bowl.  While not actually based on any Asian style or design I have achieved what I feel to be a totally  non western look.  Giving the exterior of the bowl an archaic texture, I contrasted the interior by giving it a very smooth finish with a repetitive orange drip design over neon green. This piece is currently available at South Coast Antiques & Gallery, in Ocean Springs, MS

My Blue Hanami Bowl Sold, 9-11, earthquake and tsunami in Miyagi

 Yesterday at South Coast Antiques & Gallery, I sold one of my ceramic art pottery pieces that I called "My Blue Hanami Bowl" to a woman from Northern New Mexico. She informed me that in April after the March 11 earthquake and tsunami in Miyagi prefecture, Japan, that people in Japan were requested not to observe the annual tradition of Hanami in respect of those who lost their lives. Hanami is the art of cherry blossom watching. It really made me think. I have always found Hanami to be one of the most beautiful and totally genteel of activities. It seems like such a beautiful way to show respect for those poor souls that were lost, by not participating in something so beautiful as hanami. Besides being the 10 year anniversary of 9-11 today, this also marks 6 months since the earthquake and tsunami in japan. I send my condolances to the families and friends of all people associated with both 9-11 and the earthquake-Tsunami in Japan and my prayers for those lost in both. May the wonder and the beauty of hanami once more fill your hearts.
